Buster Machines are super-powerful weapons, generally, mecha, which have major roles in both Gunbuster and Diebuster. In Top o Nerae! 2: Diebuster, Buster Machines are depicted as sentient and have their own free will, typically only obeying commands from Topless and sometimes refusing to obey regardless, such as in the case of Dix-Neuf. There is no evidence in Top o Nerae! Gunbuster to indicate that Gunbuster is sentient or that Noriko Takaya is Topless.

List of Buster Machines[]

10s Series[]

The concept behind the 10s series is not clear, due to Dix-Neuf being the last remaining example of them, and even then, not knowing which features on Dix-Neuf were present at creation or added later, compounded by the centuries of separation from the start of the 10s series. It can be speculated that it had a focus on close-quarters combat and fighting, as displayed by Dix-Neuf's demeanor and love of combat. It is also implied that 10s series Machines were powered by Degeneracy Generators, but were modified when the technology was abandoned and replaced by the Physical Canceller and the Topless.

20s Series[]

The 20s series of Buster Machines are designed with close combat in mind. Built with lightweight flexible bodies, and armed with melee weapons and other armaments to aid in their use. A number of them went through modification post-construction to give them an edge in indirect combat later on.

30s Series[]

The 30s series of Buster Machines were built with heavy armor and weaponry in mind following the sleek fighting styles of the 20s. Equipped with higher grade armor and heavy weaponry.

40s Series[]

The 40s series are more mysterious than the previous series' being immensely experimental compared to the 30s or 20s. Two of them have been sealed due to incidents in the past, implying 40s generation Machines are dangerous.

  • Buster Machine 42 - Quarante-Deux
  • Buster Machine 44 - Quarante-Quatre (sealed)
  • Buster Machine 48 - Quarante-Huit (sealed)

50s Series[]

The 50s series returns to the militaristic path of development the 30s series was set on. Focusing on long-range combat and invasion tactics. 50s series Buster Machines are typically less humanoid than others and are way larger as well.

  • Buster Machine 50 - Cinquante
  • Buster Machine 52 - Cinquante-Deux
  • Buster Machine 55 - Cinquante-Cinq
  • Buster Machine 59 - Cinquante-Neuf

60s Series[]

The 60s series goal was to make up for the 50s series lack of versatility. As such 60s series Machines aim for looser, more flexible combat styles with medium-range armaments and armor made for fighting. This generation's focus on "all-rounder" combat has lead to a high survival rate.

70s Series[]

The 70s series Embodies the combat goals of the 60s while emphasizing defense. While the generation performed well it was plagued by high production costs.

  • Buster Machine 70 - Soixante-Dix
  • Buster Machine 71 - Soixante-et-Onze
  • Buster Machine 75 - Soixante-Quinze
  • Buster Machine 76 - Soixante-Seize
  • Buster Machine 77 - Soixante-Dix-Sept

80s Series[]

The 80s series aims to cut costs by eliminating anything unnecessary for combat with space monsters. Resulting in the loss of 4 out of the first 5 Buster Machines of the series. Going forward from there the generation pioneered the "30 Buster Machine System" after the failure of mass production. Instead, focusing on more elite defense by a handful of topless. To reflect this, Buster Machines were built with high speed, maneuverability, strong weaponry, and are designed for a hit-and-run fighting style, to optimize pilot safety. To make all this possible, humanoid forms have been abandoned, producing designs similar to the 50s.

  • Buster Machine 80 - Quatre-Vingts
  • Buster Machine 85 - Quatre-Vingt-Cinq
  • Buster Machine 87 - Quatre-Vingt-Sept
  • Buster Machine 88 - Quatre-Vingt-Huit
  • Buster Machine 89 - Quatre-Vingt-Neuf

90s Series[]

The 90s series continues to use the hit-and-run combat following its success in the 80s series but adapts it to a humanoid frame for a more flexible form of combat compared to the 80s, and is also miniaturized as a result of new technology. It also introduces technology that can channel Exotic Maneuvers through special weaponry.
